Adhesives for Wearable Applications – Interview with Adhesives Research

Adhesives have many fields of applications and are an important part of the wearables ecosystem. Adhesives Research will exhibit with us again at the WT | Wearable Technologies Conference in Munich on February 7-8. Mary Robertson, Director of Sales, answered some questions about possible areas of application in the wearables industry and how they think the market will evolve over the next few years.

1)    Can you tell us what Adhesives Research is about?

Adhesives Research is an independent developer and manufacturer of high performance pressure-sensitive adhesives. AR’s coated products are found in the worlds leading Healthcare companies in markets such as Wearable Sensors, Woundcare, Medical devices and Drug delivery devices. With more than 50 years of experience in custom adhesive formulation and processing, AR is dedicated to delivering the highest possible quality and reliability in design, manufacture and delivery of our products and services.

2)    Why are your solutions and products interesting for the wearables market?

AR has a versatile skin-friendly adhesive platforms provide custom bonding options for body-worn devices. AR designs bespoke products for companies developing Wearable Sensors through designing both the device needs and the end-user needs into the performance of our adhesive coated products. Critical attributes such as ease of use, comfort during wearing, wear performance, wear-times ( hours to 14days + ) and activity levels  and biocompatibility with the skin significantly enhance the performance of our customers Wearable Sensor products and enhance the End-User’s experience during wear.

3)    Will there be any innovations we can look forward to?

Focusing on Healthcare applications wearable sensors offer dramatic advances in monitoring an individuals healthcare, not only in the management of their health but also lifestyle. From products that manage chronic disease such as blood glucose testing to products that measure wellness and fitness, pressure-sensitive adhesives offer enabling technology allowing the developer to address the technically challenging areas such as bonding new materials being used in wearable devices and  long-term wear requirements combined with the commercial aspects of economies of scale as the consumer demand expands.

4)    You have attended and exhibited us in Munich already. What do you like about the WT | Wearable Technologies Conference?

The WT | Wearable Technologies Conference offers a superb platform to hear about the developments on-going in the Wearable Sensors market, understand the challenges not related to our aspect of the market, such as energy requirements, IT requirements etc.. The conference also offers the opportunity to meet and network with people from the wide variety of industries which have a part to play on the emerging Wearable Sensors market.

5)    What is your favorite wearable devices (besides your own) and why?

I don’t have one favourite product but I am a big fan of any product that can help people with chronic disease manage their health better and are well designed so they are really easy and simple to use and allow people to get on with their lives with minimal interruption. These products offer a win-win to the companies who develop and sell such life enhancing products and to the end-user who can now take control and maximise the health benefits through closer monitoring.
