Once again, many Wearable Technologies topics covered at the 2011 Bluetooth Innovation World CupThis year’s Bluetooth Innovation World Cup boasted a mind-blowing 337 participants! The third Innovation World Cup by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) was, once again, on the lookout for new applications for the Bluetooth v4.0. The following projects in the healthcare category, a field of particular interest to the Wearable Technologies industry, reached the finals: Guilherme de Paula from Pancreum LLC. created the CoreMD, a wireless communication and power infrastructure for low-cost replaceable/disposable wearable medical devices that can sense body conditions (temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, interstitial glucose, etc) and/or deliver subcutaneously delivered drugs (insulin, glucagon, vasopressors, etc). The CoreMD, not disposable, provides a Bluetooth low energy technology link, a rechargeable coin cell battery for power and connectors with control lines, to the connected sensors and infusion sets (disposable after a few days of use). Arturas Vaitaitis submitted a concept for an ID wristband and health monitor for newborn infants to monitor the baby’s activity level and prevent a sudden infant death syndrome. This wristband will be able to transmit activity and heartbeat in real-time via Bluetooth low energy technology and could alarm nursing staff at hospitals or the parents to help in case of emergency. The Connected medicine packaging and treatment adherence aid system developed by Dan Corkum consists of three components: Bluetooth Low Energy technology enabled medicine packaging devices which attach to existing prescription drug packaging – a connected cap. Furthermore there will be an App running on the patient’s smartphone, computer, or other Bluetooth enabled device with internet connectivity. Thirdly, a centralized external server and a web application which oversees the Connected Caps and patient Apps, facilitate communication and data transfer between the patient’s devices and medical professionals. We are psyched to see who gets ahead in the race and we are cheering on the implementation of these projects! Are you interested in medical Wearable Technologies topics? Visit us at the MEDICA, from November 16 through 19, in hall 15 C04. There, you can learn more about the exciting products our exhibitors have to offer.
