Wearable Technologies Solutions in the Biochemical Field
It‘s been another great month for the wearable technologies industry, with lots of activities and innovations popping up. Pixie Scientific started an Indiegogo campaign, offering smart diapers that monitor children‘s health. The diapers have an embedded dry-reagent panel detecting urinary tract infections, prolonged dehydration and kidney problems. With this innovative solution monitoring children’s health becomes as easy as scanning the diaper‘s front with a smartphone app. Algorithms analyze the image for trends and can warn even before visible symptoms occur. Pixie Scientific plans to add more indicators to its smart diapers in the future and describes their solution as an unintrusive technology for prevention for the youngest.
Combat Malaria with a New Werable Patch
Another great project on Indiegogo plans to allow humans to go undetected by mosquitoes and thus solve the threat of malaria. Kite, a small patch, uses non-toxic compounds blocking mosquitoes’ ability to detect carbon dioxide, their primary method of tracking humans. Kite‘s makers are currently raising funds to test their first batch in Uganda within the following months. The patches offer protection for up to 48 hours and will be distributed globally, once the product has been optimized after the field test and the company obtained approval by the U.S. EPA.
Flextronics Launches Lab IX, An Accelerator for Hardware Startups
Flextronics, title sponsor of the last Wearable Technologies Conference, has announced its new accelerator program Lab IX. The hardware manufacturer who works with companies like Apple wants to support early stage disruptive start-ups incorporating hardware and software innovation. Approved companies receive up to $500,000 in funding, get access to Flextronic‘s experience in hardware design, manufacturing and logistics, and benefit from Flextronic‘s partners at an unprecedented scale. One of the first companies to join Flextronics was ICEdot who recently presented their partnership in the following video.
World‘s First Medical Glassware Incubator Glassomics Announced
Glassomics ® is a new incubator focusing entirely on medical informatics applications for Google GLASS, Smart Watches, and Sensors. Founded by Palomar Health and Qualcomn Life, Glassomics is looking for new ideas that will be translated into working prototypes and explored in Palomar Health‘s hospital of the future. Glassomics aims to explore wearable computing applications in medicine; including augmented reality guided clinical applications, new user experience paradigms for clinical navigation of complex data, and physiological monitoring applications.
Wearable Technologies US Conference
The second Wearable Technologies US Conference which took place July 22/23 has been huge success. About 300 attendees met at the fully booked event in San Francisco for two days of exciting speeches, panels and product presentations.
