Exhibitor Overview #WTUS16 Part 4: Enabling Tech & Ecosystem

If you follow our activities you know that WT | Wearable Technologies gives the overall picture of the entire WT ecosystem. So we do not only present consumer products at our events, but also show a wide range of relevant technologies improving the UX, capabilities and lifetime of wearables, showcase material solutions allowing new design and form factors and discuss legal issues. Feel free to talk to our exhibitors below at the WT | Wearable Technologies Conference 2016 USA in San Francisco on July 12-13 and perhaps you will find the ideal solution for one of your problems or a new long-term partner to implement their tech in your mobile application.

MICRO-MOLDING

You were wondering where all those tiny parts in sensor packaging, housings, or connectors come from? Then you should talk to Accumold. They are busy in the field since 30 years already. Micro-molding is the art of producing small and micro-sized injection molded plastic parts and components and Accumold is a high-tech manufacturer of those, for markets that include micro-electronics, medical and micro-optic applications. They offer processes like insert molding, clean room molding and 2-shot molding and know what materials suit you best (PEEK, Ultem, and LCP).

SEMICONDUCTORS:

ASE Group is the world’s largest provider of outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) manufacturing services. They offer design manufacturing services for IC packaging, design and production of interconnect materials, front-end engineering test, wafer probing and final test and further electronic manufacturing services through their subsidiary company USI, so all stages of the semiconductor manufacturing process (besides wafer fabrication) and offer ideal solutions for the faster, smarter, portable and integrated electronic products.

DOWA develops and manufactures Infrared, Red and Deep UV LED bare dice for various sensors and healthcare applications such as medical sensors, touch panels, proximity sensors and infrared communication. The wavelengths range from near infrared to visible light (265-340nm and 650-1900nm) and are available as LPE and MOCVD. LEDs can be used for optical data transmission with a both high power and high data rate (e.g. medical sensors, encoders, Optocoupler) and for lighting with high power (e.g. for security cameras, night photography). With their high power and high efficiency LEDs are great for saving energy consumption in wearable devices.

ADHESIVES, COATING AND PRINTED ELECTRONICS:

Printed and organic electronics become increasingly relevant for the wearables market. We are happy to welcome OE-A as exhibitor and speaker at our event. If you are interested in learning about their association and what the advantages of printed electronics are, and how you can implement them in your products, talk to them.

Another example of hidden helpers you do not see at first sight are adhesives. Lohmann Precision Die Cutting specializes in converting pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, films, foams, membranes and custom laminates for fragile skin. Amongst others quite interesting for those amongst you working on a patch or stickable. Soft-Stick™ for example is perfectly suitable for manufacturers of advanced would care products. Why? The product is low trauma, gamma sterilized stable adhesives offering comfort for patients with fragile skin.

Bluestar Silicones has a full range of silicones for medical, textile coatings, and electronic applications (incl. LSRs, HCRs, RTVs, skin adhesives, gels and fluids). Their materials are designed to meet biocompatibility, quality and lot-to-lot consistency needs. Talk to their team to find out which solutions meets your requirements best.

SENSORS:

Sensirion offers the patented CMOSens Technology, with on-chip calibration data and a multitude of interface options incorporated. The company has over 15 years’ experience in developing and supplying environmental sensor solutions and are a leader in IoT. With minimum size, ultra-low power consumption and fully calibrated digital output, their Sensor solutions are ideally applicable for mobile solutions. Sensirion does not only provide humidity, temperature, gas and pressure sensors, but also supports their clients with mechanical design-in, the development of sophisticated algorithms and integration.

ENERGY / BATTERIES:

VARTA Microbattery is one of the world’s leading battery manufacturers. With production facilities and sales subsidiaries worldwide, they fulfill the customers’ requirements all over the world. VARTA Microbattery’s latest development is the CoinPower series of lithium-ion rechargeable micro batteries suitable for medical, industrial and wearable electronics which can enhance design flexibility, manufacturing efficiencies and cost effectiveness. Consisting of CP 1254 A2, CP 1654 A2 and CP 1454 A3 parts, the series supports a voltage level of 3.7 V and capacities of 50mAh, 100mAh and 85mAh and facilitate an energy density of up to 30% higher than comparable batteries on the market. Learn more about the size, weight and lifetime at their booth.

Ascent Batteries is a designer and manufacturer of shaped Lithium-Polymer rechargeable batteries (for non tech experts: Lithium Polymer batteries are very safe and highly customizable) based in North America and in China. The products meet the demands for performance, energy density, safety, light weight and longer cycle life and are highly suitable for Wearable, Consumer electronics, and Industrial markets. Here you find an interview with Andy Crump from Ascent Batteries.

COMMUNICATION / CONNECTIVITY:

Micro-Coax has specialized in high quality custom transmission line solutions and can provide custom technical solutions for signal transmissions from Point A to Point B in the most challenging environmental conditions. At #WTUS16 they will present ARACON, a high strength conductive fiber. Instead of the traditional silver plated copper braid common for coaxial cables, they are made from KEVLAR® and are more lightweight (30% less) and have a stronger connector attachment. With the addition of nickel, copper, and silver coatings, ARACON fibers provide a versatile combination of physical and electrical properties for a variety of demanding applications. The conductive yarns are ideally suited for textiles by combining a DC resistance of less than 1 ohm per foot in a diameter of 0.014 inches.

NXP is the world leader in secure connectivity solutions for embedded applications, driving innovation in the secure connected vehicle, end-to-end security & privacy and smart connected solutions markets. At the WT | Wearable Technologies Conference, they will amongst others present Hexiwear, a Microcontroller based solution with 6 sensing functions, OLED display, BLE connectivity, rechargeable battery and 200+ expansion boards and WaRP7, a microprocessor based solution with 4GB RAM and 8GB Flash memory, color LCD display, Wifi and BLE connectivity and rechargeable battery.

DISPLAYS:

Another indispensable part of most wearable devices are displays. Futaba is one of the first companies to commercialize bendable PMOLED (Passive-Matrix OLED ) displays made out of plastic instead of glass. They are extremely robust and shatterproof and not sensitive against daily usage, further lightweight, thin and flexible which also allows new form factors for the wearables industry. PMOLEDs are self-luminous, have a low power consumption and are thin and lightweight and have a bright and wide viewing angle.

MANUFACTURING PARTNERS:
