PolyOne, who will be exhibiting at our WT | Wearable Technologies Conference 2018 USA in San Francisco on July 11-12, has launched the first-ever thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) material able to resist blue jean staining for white and light-colored phone cases.
If you’re like me who believes the cellphone should always stay inside the pants pocket even when sitting down, then you know how it feels when you get blue jean stains on your phone case. No more worries; Ohio-based company PolyOne’s thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) material will solve the problem.

“Leading phone case brand owners have been searching for a blue jean stain resistant material that offers expanded design freedom,” said Michelle Hearn, global marketing director, Specialty Engineered Materials at PolyOne. “In addition to a boost in design capabilities, our new stain-resistant TPEs also offer the supply chain flexibility and ease of processing that brands require to bring their white and light-colored phone cases to market both quickly and cost effectively.”
Brands using Versaflex CE 3320-70 TPE can avoid the sourcing and manufacturing issues of silicone, and it is the only thermoplastic material that resists blue jean staining when used in white and light-colored phone cases.
To see how effective the materials are, PolyOne used the same meticulous test methodology used to measure blue jean staining on automotive car seats. The test showed no sign of staining by Versaflex CE 3320-70 equal to that of a branded white silicone case, which is the industry benchmark.
In addition to blue jean stain resistance, the new Versaflex CE material provides strong performance seen in other related consumer materials. The material resists sunscreen, hand sanitizer and isopropyl alcohol while enduring UV light. This recyclable thermoplastic also processes faster than silicones and when overmolded, it sticks well to polycarbonate.
This new offering by Versaflex can be pre-colored to specifications or used with a PolyOne OnColor masterbatch colorant.
