AirPods 2 Rumor Suggests Inclusion of Biometrics and Wellness Sensors

AirPods 2 Upgrade

Apple AirPods have been consistently generating good revenue for Apple, and although AirPods 2 haven’t yet been officially announced by Apple, Cupertino is rushing to update them. This may be because Apple is planning to include Biometrics and Wellness Sensors to the new AirPods, according to experts.

AirPods recently cleared Bluetooth SIG Certification for Bluetooth 5.0. That’s a tiny upgrade from the Bluetooth 4.2 version featured on the original Apple AirPods and could mean that the Apple AirPods 2 will last longer than before and stay connected when you move farther away from the source.

New trademark filings by Apple, the ones just made in Europe and Hong Kong, hint at the kinds of features future AirPods may cover. There are three new classes, 10, 14 and 28, reports Forbes.

The first of these, Class 10, covers general wellness instruments “namely health fitness, exercise, and wellness sensors, health, fitness, exercise, and wellness sensors, monitors, speakers and displays for measuring, displaying, tracking, reporting, monitoring, storing, and transmitting biometric data, heart rate, body movement, and calories burned; hearing aids; medical apparatus and instruments; apparatus for use in medical analysis; testing apparatus for medical purposes; pulse meters; thermometers for medical purposes; spirometers [medical apparatus]; dental apparatus; heart rate monitoring apparatus; ear plugs [ear protection devices]; feeding bottles; non-chemical contraceptives; hair prostheses; plaster bandages for orthopaedic purposes; suture materials,” according to Forbes.

These inclusions hint that AirPods will join the iPhone and Apple Watch in tracking health parameters.

According to a Bloomberg report, 2018 and 2019 updates mean that the AirPods will have better Bluetooth connectivity thanks to the inclusion of the W2 chip used in the Apple Watch 3.

This W2 chip upgrade hints that the new AirPods are going to feature baked-in voice activation, meaning you’ll be able to access Apple’s voice assistant by just uttering “Hey Siri”

According to the Bloomberg report, the 2019 update may have waterproofing, although it looks like it’s going to be splash and rain resistant rather than true waterproofing like the Apple Watch. So, you’d better take them off before jumping in the swimming pool.

Apple may formally reveal details about its new AirPods sometime in the future. Meanwhile, leaks and rumors about the new AirPods give us some ideas about what’s cooking up behind the scenes.
