The Movember Foundation, which aims to raise awareness of men’s health issues, has launched wearable contactless donation badges to help avoid the problems facing charity fundraising given the decline of cash in many countries.
Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide.
This year, with the declining use of coins and notes in the UK and other countries, and the increased use of alternative types of payment, such as mobile payments, the Movember Foundation has become the first charity to introduce contactless donation badges to support its “no-fuss fundraising”.
“Movember started as a simple way to raise money and awareness for a good cause, something that anyone can take part in – the contactless badge is the next step,” said Owen Sharp, Movember CEO. “So many of our incredible supporters take part in amazing challenges and our no-fuss badges take donating to a whole new level, allowing our fundraisers to wear the badges with pride.”
A donor places their smartphone on a participant’s NFC-embedded wearable badge to donate to the campaign. The fundraiser then activates the badge using an NFC-enabled phone, reports Third Sector.
These badges use Thyngs technology.
When the donor taps their smartphone on the badge, a webform opens on the device, from which the donor selects an amount and makes a payment using Apple Pay, Google pay or Paypal. Each badge is unique.
An added bonus of using the Thyngs technology-enabled badges is that, in addition to making it easier for people to donate, they let Movember participants see how much they’ve raised through the fundraising dashboard.
